Reiter Dairy, a Midwestern dairy processor, has announced that the milk processing facility, located at 1019 Flaxmill Road, is transitioning to become a part of the Reiter Dairy family.

Reiter has been nourishing families in the Midwest with dairy products for nearly 90 years. Today, Reiter Dairy is a farmer-owned brand of Dairy Farmers of America (DFA), a national dairy cooperative that helps support local dairy farm families.

“Reiter Dairy began on the farm and has always been about producing fresh, wholesome dairy products to consumers in the Midwest,” said Patrick Dunne, general manager at Reiter Dairy. “We are thrilled to introduce our great-tasting products to consumers and retailers throughout northern Indiana.”

Reiter Dairy was founded in 1933 on a small farm in Akron, Ohio, by Ralph Reiter and his son, Harold. Over the years, Ralph was always looking for ways to innovate and pioneer the use of cellophane to cover the tops of the glass milk bottles and he invented an applicator to place rubber bands around the covering. Reiter Dairy was also the first in Akron to use the homogenization process to help produce and deliver fresh products.

Nearly 90 years later, Reiter Dairy products are now produced in Huntington, processing more than 45 million gallons of milk per year that is sourced from local dairy farmers in Indiana to make its fluid milk, which is then delivered to more than 2,700 retail stores and schools throughout northern Indiana.

The Huntington facility, which currently employees more than 190 people, produces fluid milk, tea and other drinks. Additionally, the current management team will continue to handle the plant’s day-to-day operations, and all employees will retain their current positions.
